Women’s Day

Celebrate Women’s Day with Hello-Africa!

Whilst women should be celebrated and cherished every day, every year during the month of August, special attention is paid to the beautiful and strong women of South Africa.

As in many other countries, the history of women in South Africa is flawed. Due to the oppressive system of Apartheid, thousands of women took to the streets of South Africa to petition against legislation that required black Africans to carry a “pass”.

On August 9 1956, 20 000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against The Urban Areas Act that required that a black person carry around an identification document which restricted a black South African’s freedom of movement under Apartheid. This day represents the power women embody when they stand together.

Although South African women face their fair amount of challenges today, that historic women’s march to the Union Buildings some 60 years ago is evidence of the strength and courage all women continue to possess. Therefore, every year a month is dedicated to all women for their strength, courage and resilience. A good way to commemorate this event is to encourage and empower women of all races. It is important that we push women to realise the potential they hold in every aspect of their lives, whether that be in their careers, their family life, or their place in society as a whole. While all of this is a collective societal effort that will take constant work to achieve, you can show your appreciation to the women in your life through the little things.
