People Opposing Women Abuse
In 2010 Hello-Africa pledged to share 50% of every album they sold from October to December with a young woman Jolandie Rust - who is set to be the first woman to circumnavigate the African continent alone on a bike in 2011. We have been able to put nearly R5000 towards her trip in order to help her say 'Hello Africa' as an empowered and inspiring woman! In 2006 enough Future Copies of 'Journey' had been sold that Verity was able to do the first POWA payout. On a trip to Johannesburg she spent a day buying much needed crockery, cutlery and linen for one of the POWA shelters. The staff at the shelter were thrilled to have their safe house refurbished with cheerful crockery and enough linen and duvet sets for the entire house.  In 2007 as album sales continued to climb Verity was able to buy the POWA office two very needed fax machines and copiers. They were handed over to one of the POWA co-ordinators in Johannesburg and put to work straight away.
In 2007 Verity awarded 2 Intec Bursaries to POWA as prizes for their annual writing competition. The bursaries were valued at R5000 each and were used as an incentive to invite more women to write about their experience and recovery from abusive situations.
Verity became involved with the Saartjie Baartmen Centre for Women and Children in Mannenberg in Cape Town in 2006 and MC'd their AGM where she presented them with 2 INTEC Bursaries for women at the centre. In 2007, INTEC awarded a further 10 bursaries for young women in the centre to have an opportunity to further their education after finishing school. |
We would like to continue to contribute to worthy causes such as POWA but can only do so if we receive continued support from our fans. As an independent band we are only as strong as the support we receive. The better we do the more good we will be able to do!
